# How to Prepare:

01 - Cut the pressed tofu block into 8 thin, even slices for even cooking.
02 - In a shallow dish, whisk together soy sauce, olive oil, maple syrup, smoked paprika, liquid smoke, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper until well combined.
03 - Add tofu slices to the marinade, turning to coat thoroughly. Let marinate for at least 15 minutes, turning once halfway through.
04 - Heat a nonstick skillet or grill pan over medium heat. Add tofu slices and cook for 3–4 minutes per side, until golden brown and slightly crispy edges form.
05 - Toast bread slices until golden. Spread vegan mayonnaise on one side of each slice if desired.
06 - Layer ingredients on each sandwich in this order: lettuce leaves, tomato slices, smoky tofu, and red onion if using. Top with remaining bread slices.
07 - Slice sandwiches in half diagonally and serve immediately while tofu is still warm.

# Expert Suggestions:

01 -
  • You get all the satisfying smoky flavor of a BLT without actually using bacon
  • The tofu marinade comes together in minutes and transforms plain tofu into something crave-worthy
02 -
  • Dont skip pressing the tofu or the marinade wont absorb properly and youll end up with watery, flavorless slices
  • Let the pan get properly hot before adding the tofu so you get good color and caramelization
03 -
  • Cast iron gives the best sear, but nonstick works perfectly fine and is easier for cleanup
  • If the tofu sticks, let it cook another minute, it will release naturally once properly caramelized
